Sciatica
Causes, Symptoms, and Lifestyle Factors
Sciatica is a painful condition that happens when the sciatic nerve gets irritated or compressed. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body — it runs from the lower back, through the hips, down the legs, and into the feet. When there is pressure on this nerve, it causes pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the lower back and legs.
This condition can affect anyone but is more common in adults with jobs that involve long hours of sitting, standing, or heavy lifting.
Causes of Sciatica
The main causes of sciatica include:
Slipped or herniated disc – When a disc in the spine bulges or ruptures and presses on the sciatic nerve.
Spinal stenosis – Narrowing of the spinal canal that squeezes the nerves.
Bone spurs – Extra bone growth in the spine pressing on nerves.
Injury or trauma – Accidents or falls that damage the spine or hips.
Obesity – Extra weight increases strain on the lower back.
Poor posture – Sitting or standing incorrectly for long periods.
Pregnancy – Added weight and changes in posture can irritate the sciatic nerve.
Symptoms of Sciatica
The signs of sciatica usually appear only on one side of the body. Common symptoms are:
- Sharp or burning pain starting in the lower back and going down to the leg
Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot
Muscle weakness in the affected leg
Pain that worsens when sitting for long periods
Pain that increases with coughing or sneezing
Difficulty standing up or walking for a long time
Lifestyle Factors That Increase Risk
Sedentary lifestyle – Lack of exercise weakens back muscles.
Heavy lifting – Improper lifting of weights or objects strains the back.
Overweight – More body weight puts extra stress on the spine.
Bad posture – Slouching while working, driving, or sleeping incorrectly.
Prolonged sitting – Desk jobs without breaks increase risk.
