Psoriasis
Causes, Symptoms, and Lifestyle Factors
Psoriasis is a long-term skin condition where the body’s immune system speeds up the life cycle of skin cells. Normally, skin cells grow and shed in about 28–30 days. In psoriasis, new cells build up in just 3–4 days, but the old cells don’t fall off quickly. This causes thick, scaly patches that may look red, white, or silver on the skin.
Psoriasis is not contagious, but it can affect a person’s confidence and quality of life. It often comes and goes in cycles — with flare-ups lasting for weeks or months, followed by periods of improvement.
Causes of Psoriasis
The exact cause is not fully understood, but several factors play a role:
- Overactive immune system – The body mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, causing rapid cell growth.
Genetics – A family history of psoriasis increases the risk.
Skin injuries – Cuts, scrapes, or sunburn can trigger psoriasis patches.
Infections – Throat infections (like strep throat) can start flare-ups.
Stress – High stress levels weaken the immune system.
Certain medicines – Drugs for blood pressure, malaria, or mental health can worsen psoriasis.
Weather conditions – Cold and dry weather often increases symptoms.
Symptoms of Psoriasis
Psoriasis symptoms may look different for each person, but some common ones include:
Raised red patches of skin covered with silvery-white scales
Itching, burning, or soreness in affected areas
Dry, cracked skin that may bleed
Thickened or ridged nails (nail psoriasis)
Stiff or swollen joints (psoriatic arthritis in severe cases)
Flare-ups that worsen in winter or after stress
The patches often appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, lower back, and nails.
Lifestyle Factors That Can Worsen Psoriasis
Unhealthy diet – Too much junk food, red meat, and alcohol.
Smoking – Increases risk of severe psoriasis.
Stressful living – Triggers flare-ups.
Obesity – More body weight worsens skin inflammation.
Alcohol consumption – Can interfere with treatment and increase flare-ups.
Cold weather – Reduces natural skin moisture, making symptoms worse.
