Gangrene

Causes, Symptoms, and Lifestyle Factors

Gangrene is a serious condition that happens when a part of the body loses blood supply and the tissue starts to die. It usually affects the fingers, toes, and limbs but can also develop inside the body in muscles and organs.

When blood cannot reach a certain area, the tissues don’t get enough oxygen and nutrients. Slowly, they get damaged and may become infected. If not treated in time, gangrene can spread and may even require surgery to remove the dead tissue.

Causes of Gangrene

Gangrene mostly happens due to poor blood flow or infection. Common causes include:

  • Blocked blood supply – Conditions like diabetes, atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries), or blood clots.

  • Injury or trauma – Severe wounds, burns, or crush injuries.

  • Infections – Bacterial infections can destroy tissues.

  • Frostbite – Extreme cold damages tissues and cuts off blood supply.

  • Smoking – Narrows blood vessels and reduces circulation.

  • Weak immunity – People with chronic illnesses are more at risk.

  • Obesity – Increases chances of blocked arteries.

  •

Symptoms of Gangrene

Symptoms depend on the type of gangrene (dry, wet, or gas gangrene). Some common signs are:

  • Discolored skin — turning red, brown, blue, purple, or black

  • Severe pain followed by numbness

  • Swelling and blisters filled with fluid

  • Foul-smelling discharge from the wound (in wet gangrene)

  • Fever, weakness, and confusion (if infection spreads)

  • Cold and pale skin in the affected area

  • Loss of function in the limb or organ

Lifestyle Factors That Increase Risk

  • Diabetes – High sugar damages blood vessels and nerves.

  • Smoking – Strongly increases risk of gangrene.

  • Poor diet – High fat and sugar diet blocks arteries.

  • Lack of exercise – Reduces blood circulation.

  • Obesity – Adds pressure on heart and blood vessels.

  • Neglecting wounds – Even small cuts can worsen if untreated.
