Leucoderma

Causes, Symptoms, and Lifestyle Factors

Leucoderma, also known as Vitiligo, is a skin condition where white patches develop due to loss of skin pigment (melanin). Melanin is the pigment that gives color to our skin, hair, and eyes. When pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) are destroyed or stop functioning, the skin loses its color, resulting in white spots or patches.

Though not painful or contagious, Leucoderma often affects a person’s confidence and emotional health. It can appear at any age, but usually starts before the age of 30.

Causes of Leucoderma

The exact cause of Leucoderma is not fully understood, but several factors are believed to play a role:

  • Autoimmune reaction – The body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys melanocytes.

  • Genetics – Family history of vitiligo increases the chances.

  • Stress – Both physical and emotional stress can trigger or worsen the condition.

  • Skin injury – Cuts, burns, or rashes may develop into white patches.

  • Chemical exposure – Harmful chemicals in cosmetics, synthetic clothing, or industrial materials.

  • Other diseases – Thyroid disorders, diabetes, or other autoimmune conditions.

  •

Symptoms of Leucoderma

  • White patches on skin – Commonly seen on face, hands, feet, arms, and around body openings.

  • Premature graying of hair – On scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or beard.

  • Color loss inside mouth or nose – Mucous membranes may also lose pigment.

  • Uneven skin tone – Patchy appearance due to scattered pigmentation loss.

  • Psychological impact – Stress, anxiety, or low self-esteem because of visible patches.

Lifestyle Factors That Worsen Leucoderma

  • Prolonged stress and lack of sleep

  • Excessive consumption of junk food or chemically processed foods

  • Overexposure to sunlight without protection

  • Wearing synthetic or tight clothing that irritates skin

  • Weak immunity due to poor diet or chronic illness

  • Use of chemical-based skin products
